The consortium is composed of a team of highly qualified experts whose talents combine to form the critical mass needed to address the main topic to achieve maximum exploitation of project deliverables: research, development, and dissemination. The project is implemented by three partners, of which one university participating with four research centers from three different faculties, and a large company participating with three different departments. The academic partners are part of the larger National consortium for the Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements, a group of institutions who has run several partnership projects. The University of Bucharest will be the coordinating institution. The coordinator has longstanding experience in a large number of national and international projects. This will be backed by financial, legal and logistical support from the University administration.

(CO) University of Bucharest is one of the most important high-level education institution, research and culture from Romania having a national and international prestige. It was the first Romanian institution ranked in the first 600 University of the World. Founded more than 145 years ago, the university offers numerous study programs at all level and universitary forms: 84 maters programs (including also TIFFIN EMBA program), more than 50 doctoral programs, and programs for postdoctoral study, professional reconverting and training. In the "The Times Higher Education Supplement" 2007 it was published that the numerous professors and generations of students achieved to impose University of Bucharest in the first 500 from the world. All diplomas from the University of Bucharest are recognized in the majority of the country of the world. The University of Bucharest is one of the most important research centers from Romania having more than 50 institutions, departments and scientific research sub-centers, most of them being in a very good cooperation with similar research center from abroad. University of Bucharest is represented by a Research Centre for Ecological Services – CESEC. The Research Center for Ecological Services – CESEC (www.cesec.ro , its mission is to catalyse the cooperation between the faculties of Biology, Geology, Geography and Chemistry in the field of fundamental and applied ecology. CESEC includes in its structure a division dedicated to biogeochemistry, and co-coordinates the Romanian national consortium for the biogeochemistry of trace elements), Research Centers at the Faculty of Geology dealing with mineralogy, geochemistry and hidrogeology (http://www.geo.edu.ro/Geoscience/index-en.html, http://www.geo.edu.ro/Catmin/Eng/LYTHOS.html, http://www.unibuc.ro/en/cc_cchiga_en), and a Research Center at the Faculty Chemistry specialized in biochemistry and molecular biology, and chemo-genomics.

P1 (Prospectiuni SA) is a major provider of geological and geophysical expertise, with over 60 years of experience in the Romanian Mineral Resources industry. PROMEDIU, the environmental division of company is active in the fields of environmental protection and waste management. Together with Chemical, Geological and Environmental PROSPECTIUNI Laboratories there are covered a large range of activities: field testing, monitoring, subsurface investigations, laboratory analysis, environmental impact assessment, waste management studies, risk evaluations (for contaminants) and monitoring programmes. Assistance with producing technical and financial solutions for specific activities related to environmental aspects recorded in company one of the most spectacular increasing value in the last years. Its turnover represented almost 3% of that of the whole company and the profit margin recorded one spectacular 20%, due to the quality of services and action on the “border area” between environment rehabilitation and economical use of mineral resources. A short counting of the environment projects includes: DEKONTA rehabilitation project for Petrom waste ponds and for Crangurile, Dambovita waste pond, HALCROW rehabilitation program for well closure program for OMV, UNI RECYCLING water monitoring drilling, ISPE – Laboratory analysis for hydrocarbons, CI, pH from Petrom closing wells program, RAMBOLL project for Petrom bioremediation platform, ARCELOR MITTAL Roman environment monitoring (sampling and laboratory analysis), VIVANI DESEURI volume evaluation for Suplacu de Barcau sludge pond, new design environment monitoring and documentations, HYDROCONSTRUCTIA sampling and laboratory analysis, SENTOR sampling from drills and laboratory analysis for environment studies etc.

(P2) Institute of Biology Bucharest (IBB) is a leading public research institute and belongs to Romanian Academy. IBB is a research institute interested in the balanced development of both fundamental and applied research. It has closed relationships with international institutions, universities, companies, local government and other types association and takes social and economic consideration into account. With more than 20 bilateral international agreements, 50 national and international projects IBB have links with the most prestigious Universities and organizations in Europe and in the world. The main research directions in the recent years include: study of biodiversity in Romania (plants, animals, microorganisms) and the relationships with biotic and abiotic factors; study of microorganisms in extreme and hostile environment; bioremediation.

The partners correlations with the technical and scientific objectives are pointed out by the distribution of responsibilities for WPs (table 2) and for specific activities within WPs (Figure 3, the Gant-Pert diagram of the project indicating the partner responsible for each activity).

The partners have no on-going projects having links with the proposed research work. The past projects have been referred in the text.
